Our Story: Let's Hear it for the Boys

Joe and I met at a bar (I know, romantic, right) in May 2005.  We were engaged on December 17th that same year.  On October 21, 2006 we said, "I do," and walked out of the Cathedral as husband and wife.  We honeymooned in Hawaii, settled into our routine, worked on the house, traveled, and spent a lot of time with friends.  A few months before our third anniversary everything changed.

I found out we were expecting in mid August 2009.  I took four tests because I just couldn't believe it.  The doc wouldn't see me for 9 weeks.  Ugh.  I just wanted medical confirmation.  Well I got what I asked for.  And more.

You're definitely pregnant.

With identical twins.

Monoamniotic Monochorionic ("Mono Mono") - the rarest and most risky kind next to conjoined twins.  The babies share a placenta and a sac with nothing separating them, which presents possible risks of unequal growth and cord entanglement.

I had a 50% chance to make it to 28 weeks in my pregnancy.

Let's just focus on getting to week 24.

On the table at each appointment I felt like I was looking from above at someone else's life.  "Please just find two heartbeats," I thought every time.

Oh we made it to week 24!  The boys were growing equally, nor did they show any signs of cord entanglement or distress.  Merry Christmas to us and hello, Florida!

And then came week 26.  Hospital bed rest for monitoring.  It wasn't a matter of IF, it was a matter of WHEN.

So this is where I stayed until week 32.  Thank goodness for amazing friends and loving family to keep me sane.

Happy Hour Hospital-style!

But the bed rest was just the beginning.  On February 23, 2010 around 1:30pm the party really got started!  Garrett and Gavin were born perfect and healthy.  They spent the first 5 1/2 weeks of their life in the NICU to grow and by the grace of God had sidestepped every possible obstacle.  I documented our journey here...

And on April 1, 2010 all four of us were finally under one roof.  By my 30th birthday that June these are the sweet faces that greeted me each day.
